Mathy smiling

Well isn't that just adorable.

I made the head slightly wider than before, and altough it might be hard to see on the picture, it really made all the difference.

Where are you, Petter?!

I haven't posted much here since the early 3D "sketch", but to be honest I haven't had much faith in the project lately... untill now. But now I'm back in action and despite some problems with the model, which I'll share with you in a bit, things have been running smoothly.

But enough chat. Here is the high poly - and still under development - model of Mathrax:

Note that I just slammed these colors on. These are not the final textures or anything.

Also note that this model is not finished. I haven't even started on the hair yet, and he looks a bit flat, so I want to round him out a bit. The body also suffers from this, and I haven't completely decided on the color for the pants and chestpiece.

But here is what you have been waiting for: the problems.

First of all, this is taking ten times longer than I thought it would. I'm starting to feel the pressure, to put it that way. It's like whenever I fix something, it "spawns" another problem. Just delightful.

Second: "Did someone say lowpoly?"

Keeping the model as low poly as possible can be a pain at times. At this point, adding "swiftloops" will be a nono.

Third: "Quads!"

Finding polys with only three vertixes is always fun.

Four: as I said before, the model is way too flat. It needs hotfix.

That's all for now. Update coming soon!

...

It's alive! It's ALIIIVE!

Sort of...

This is the "box model" of Mathrax so it's still in an early stage.

Problems: The hair tend to end up as a mess, and I have to start over alot. I keep getting the feeling that I have no idea what I'm doing. Weird.

But exept from that, things are going ok

So what's new?

I am currently watching a character tutorial called "Human anatomy" and have started "sketching" my character up in 3Ds max. I am unsure about how I am supposed to model the head, but I'm sure I'll figure it out.

I hope to have finished the model before Sunday so that I can start working on the textures.

Story

But who is this "Mathrax"? Mathrax, or Mathy as people call him, grew up in a small elven town with his mother, father and big sister. Mathrax has always been known to be a rather hopeless case, always getting into trouble. Ever since he could stand on legs he has constantly managed to mess things up, and he is as naive as his mind is pure.

Altough his family love him deeply, he is seen as a nothing but a troublemaker by the rest of the town since they have to deal with most of the problems he creates.

So now that you know alittlebit about this character, what's the story about, and who is it aimed for?

Well, when elfs reach their 900'th birthday, they are sendt out into the world to grow stronger and fight the evil that lurks there, and not suprisingly, the town can't wait to get him on his way. They give him some equipment and send him off.

The story is aimed for children from the age 5 and up, and is basicly about how Mathrax, somehow, manages to get through the countless of problems that awaits him. On his way he will face demons, orcs, elementals and other mystical creatures. He will also make great companions to help him on his way.
So basicly, this is a story filled with action and humour for the whole family.

Oblig 3

Last week we finaly recieved the details on our next big project, simply named "Character design".

The task is to make a humanoid character, which is suposed to be animationable. It is also suposed to be in three different poses, and one of them shall be used in a "turnable" animation.

To be honest I have been waiting for this task, as there is a character that I've always wanted to bring to "life"...

Meet Mathrax, an elven boy that lives in the magical world of Derenthar.

As you can see, he is not completely coloured yet as I have not decided on the colour combination.

Mathrax was inspired by the web series "Heroes of WoW", a comic created by Oskar Pannier and Marvin Clifford, which is made around the mmorpg World of Warcraft
